(UPDATE) Noynoy: No state funeral for Cory

(UPDATE) Noynoy: No state funeral for Cory

MANILA - The Aquinos have decided on a private funeral for the late President Corazon Aquino, who died early morning Saturday after battling colorectal cancer for more than a year.

Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III said they have decided to have a private funeral, instead of a state funeral.

"It won't be a state funeral," the senator said.

"That was the intention from the start," he said, adding that nobody from the presidential office had contacted him "nor am I waiting to talk to anybody there."

Aquino also said that they have not yet been contacted by Malacañang regarding any plans for a state funeral.

"For all intentions and purposes, she had been a private citizen after stepping down, and siguro, to a degree we would like to spend as much time as possible as a family with her," he said, explaining their decision.

Aquino, however, said that there will still be honor guards at the wake, as per tradition in wakes for former government officials.

"I understand there will be honor guards at La Salle. I still have to be briefed on the parts... of the protocol, and I have to consult also the rest of my siblings," he said.

The body of the former leader will lie in state at the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) gymnasium, and the wake will be open to the public at certain times, Aquino's spokesperson Deedee Siytangco told members of the media at a press conference at the Cojuangco Building in Makati City.

The public viewing at the LSGH will be held starting 5 p.m. Saturday, and will continue until Monday. The daily viewing schedule will be until 4 a.m., and will then resume on 7 a.m. There will also be a mass at the LSGH at 8 p.m. Saturday.

During the duration of the wake, there will be Catholic Masses daily at 12 noon and 8 p.m.

For those who will go to the LSGH, the line for the public viewing will start and end at the school's Gate 5.

Family members, VIP guests and members of the media will enter and exit at the LSGH Gate 6.

On Tuesday up until Wednesday, a necrological service, an overnight vigil, and a requiem will be held at the Manila Cathedral, Siytangco said. The exact times of these activities will be announced later.

On Wednesday, Aquino will be buried at the Manila Memorial Park after a 9 a.m. mass at the cathedral. She will be buried beside her late husband, Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

(Update) Arroyo declares 10-day mourning for Cory

MANILA - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo expressed her condolonces with the Aquino family for the death of former President Corazon Aquino and declared a 10-day period of national mourning.

"Today the Philippines lost a national treasure. Cory Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril. Our nation will mourn her passing. History was thrust upon her when her noble husband was cut down in the prime of his life as he fought for democracy and rule of law. She picked up the standard from the fallen warrior Ninoy and helped lead our nation to a brighter day," she said."I am announcing today that we will officially observe a 10-day period of national mourning. Our hearts go out to the family at this hour of grief and sorrow. The nation prays for Cory and her family," President Arroyo said.Press Secretary Cerge Remonde, in an earlier interview with dzMM said the Palace would announce a week-long period of national mourning.Remonde said the details of the official mourning and state funeral will depend on the Aquino family. Remonde said Mrs. Arroyo learned of the former president's death while they were in a convoy from Washington D.C. to Andrews Air Base.

Mrs. Aquino died at 3:18 a.m. August 1 at the age of 76.

Prayer for a Happy Death (2004)

Prayer for a Happy Death (2004)
by Corazon C. Aquino

Almighty God, most merciful Father
You alone know the time
You alone know the hour
You alone know the moment
When I shall breathe my last.

So remind me each day, most loving

Father
To be the best that I can be
To be humble, to be kind,
To be patient, to be true,
To embrace what is good
To reject what is evil
To adore only You.

When that final moment does come
Let not my loved ones grieve for long
Let them comfort each other
And let them know how much

happiness
They brought into my life.
Let them pray for me
As I will continue to pray for them,
Hoping that they will always pray for

each other.
Let them know that they made possible
Whatever good I offered to our world
And let them realize that our

separation
Is just for a short while
As we prepare for our reunion in

eternity.

Our Father in heaven
You alone are my hope
You alone are my salvation
Thank You for Your unconditional love.

Amen.

Options for Unemployed Nurses

Philippines: Options for Unemployed Nurses

The number of Registered Nurses in the Philippines has reached its highest peak ever in history. Every year, nursing schools produce thousands of nurses. In November 2008, approximately 88,000 BSN graduates took the licensure exam which is the largest group ever to take the exam in the country’s nursing history. At present, many RNs are jobless due to the surplus in supply. Enrollment in nursing schools is already dropping, hospitals are full, and nurses don’t know where to go.

Here are some tips for those of you looking for work:

1. Join training programs in major hospitals.

Many hospitals are currently running training programs for nurses in a variety of specialties such as Ward Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Maternal & Child Nursing, Dialysis Nursing and Operating Room Nursing. These programs are designed to enhance the skills of professional nurses. They are structured according to accepted standards of nursing and are organized by seasoned and highly experienced nurses in the clinical setting. Choose only hospitals that are known for excellence and are considered training hospitals, so that you won’t waste your time, effort and money.

2. Volunteer for Medical and Surgical Missions.

International and local charitable organizations conduct medical and surgical missions in various parts of the country all year round. These missions are great venues for skill development and enhancement, since most of the missions offer technical and educational sharing to empower the local counterparts that they visit. Nurses who join missions are carefully selected and screened to assure that they are clinically competent in their field, so neophyte nurses will surely learn from them.

3. Apply to as many hospitals as possible.

Competition in the market is tough. Submit your application letter, along with all of your credentials, to every the hospital in your area. Many applications are lined up for interviews as soon as there are vacancies. Be sure to leave a positive impression when you submit your applications to the Director of Nursing or Human Resources. Dress appropriately. Start acting like a professional as early as now.

4. Attend continuing education courses and seminars.

Build your career and resume actively. Nursing organizations and other entities conduct training courses and seminars, and new trends and advances in technology and in science are continuously being discovered. Equip yourself with the basic skills necessary, such as IV Therapy, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Paediatric Advanced Life Support Training. These courses are highly essential for nurses to learn so that they can respond to specific emergency situations inside or outside of the hospital. Nurses need to continue to learn – learning does not stop when you graduate from nursing school. We must update our skills with new techniques and apply evidence-based concepts in our work. Prospective employers are impressed with nursing applicants who desire continuing education. You may also want to enrol in graduate school and earn your Master’s Degree in Nursing.

5. Search for jobs abroad through the internet.

Using the internet to search for a job is becoming increasingly popular and opens up the door to many more opportunities. Employers and hospitals abroad use the internet as an instrument to look for healthcare professionals, and some also hire nurses without any working experience. Try your luck - your employer might be just one click away!

The hunt for a good paying nursing job can be difficult, but everyone has a chance if you follow these suggestions and remain proactive in your search. Stay positive, nurses are built to survive!

South Cotabato, Philippines: where I grew up

South Cotabato is a province of the Philippines located in the SOCCSKSARGEN region in Mindanao. Its capital is Koronadal City, and it borders Sultan Kudarat to the north and west, Sarangani to the south and east, and Davao del Sur to the east. To the southeast lies Sarangani Bay.
The people of South Cotabato are multilingual, able to communicate in Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Tagalog and English. The indigenous tribes, in addition, use their own tribal dialects. A situation wherein several people, each speaking solely in his own dialect and are still able to communicate with the others, is not unheard of.

South Cotabato is subdivided into 10 municipalities and 1 component city. General Santos City is a highly-urbanized city that is administered independently from the province.

freedom

I often wonder what does freedom really mean. Am I totally free in this world? I doubt that, as I am still dependent to somebody for survival. I can go where I want and say what I want most of the time. But is that what freedom means?

Freedom is a gift from God. It is a big responsibility with full of restrictions, full of boundaries, and that’s the reality. It has always been an idea which I choose to believe. For freedom without boundaries equals Chaos.

I can equate freedom to loneliness. Yes, I am free to speak, free to choose and free to do whatever I want, but there have been moments of loneliness along the way.

Therefore, loneliness is the price I have to pay for my freedom.

my favorite poem

Desiderata

-- written by Max Ehrmann in the 1920s --

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
